Perking Up My Front Porch

My kids and I take a walk every day. On our way back up the driveway I would look at my porch and cringe. It was empty, boring, blank, and the door needed to be repainted.

I know it is hard to see it in the before picture, but the trim around the windows on the door was beginning to peel. It wasn't horrible but the little bits of white peeking through the red paint were beginning to get on my nerves. Should the paint on a 1 year old door be peeling? NO!!! The problem was the painter decided not to prime the door before painting it.

What's that? You don't believe me! Well just take a look at this picture.

This happened after just a quick wash with a pressure washer (just water no chemicals).
Red paint everywhere!
Does that look like it was primed?
I think not.

To remedy this problem, I applied 2 coats of primer to the trim that had lost its paint. The primer I used was Sherwin Williams Multi-Purpose Interior/Exterior Latex. According to Sherwin Williams, this stuff is suppose to make surfaces that are typically unpaintable (like PVC), paintable.

Once the primer was dry, I applied 3 coats of paint. I used Behr Premium Plus Exterior Semi-Gloss Enamel, Deep Base. The color was Ruby Ring by Behr. After the paint had dried, I used a glass scraper to remove any paint that I got on the glass.

I found the pots and patio furniture in the clearance section at Target and added some plants I picked up at Home Depot. I also changed the doormat, because the previous one was old and faded.

Thankfully my porch looks a bit cheerier now, and I don't cringe every time I see it. Isn't it amazing what a little color can do?

  1. Great front porch! Love the red door! I'd like to invite you to share this at my party, Twirl & Take a Bow at www.houseontheway.com. I think it'd make a great addition! Plus, there's a great giveaway too!
